Veterans take honours at rock music awards

None are exactly bright young things, but one winner has just scored his first number one album on both sides of the Atlantic, another headlined the Isle of Wight festival last weekend and a third played the most eagerly awaited gig of last year.

Neil Diamond, the Sex Pistols and Led Zeppelin were among the big winners at last night's Mojo Honours List awards, proving that age is no barrier to continued success in the once youth-obsessed world of rock 'n' roll.

Even the newer acts that won prizes at the annual awards organised by the music magazine wear their 1960s influences on their sleeves. Duffy, the Welsh singer who has been likened to Dusty Springfield, won best single for her ubiquitous number one hit Mercy. And The Last Shadow Puppets, the Scott Walker-indebted side project put together by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and Rascals singer Miles Kane, were named best breakthrough act.

Phil Alexander, Mojo's editor, said the awards were proof that the best artists made timeless music. "It's good that there's a line drawn between the present and the past. Music is a continuum. The Duffy single sounds like a lost northern soul classic," he said.

With classic artists now having a longer shelf life thanks to digital download stores that allow users to rifle through 50 years of popular music and younger consumers able to more easily sample the acts that influence their favourite bands, many are enjoying a renaissance. Diamond, who was presented with the classic songwriter award by Richard Hawley and will play the O2 arena in London this weekend, has enjoyed the most successful period of his long career since teaming up with legendary producer Rick Rubin. His latest album, Home Before Dark, topped the charts in both the UK and the US last month, making him the oldest artist ever to have an American number one.

With older consumers a key demographic targeted by record labels because they are still paying for music rather than downloading pirated tracks from the internet, and able to pay for expensive concert tickets, many big names from the 1970s and 1980s are re-forming.

Led Zeppelin, who played a benefit gig at the O2 last year that sparked a worldwide clamour for tickets, were named best live act. Paul Weller, the former Jam frontman, was given the outstanding contribution to music award. His recent 22 Dreams album has been hailed as a return to form.

The Sex Pistols, who are working on their first new material in almost three decades after re-forming to play live several times, were handed the Mojo icon award. Alexander said the band, who played to 65,000 people on the Isle of Wight, "truly redefined modern music in the space of one solitary album".

Harrison Ford - Labeouf Blown Away By Fords Stunt Stamina

Actor SHIA LaBEOUF was so awestruck by HARRISON FORD's stamina on the set of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, he named the star The Cowboy.

LaBeouf and Ford appear together in the fourth installment of the action series, which is directed by Steven Spielberg.

But the 21-year-old Transformers star was blown away by Ford's tireless efforts, and the 65-year-old's insistence to perform the majority of stunts himself earned him the nickname.

LaBeouf says, "Harrison would be beat to s**t every day. He did 90 per cent of the stunts. I'd watch him take the hits. Over and over. And he never asks for the medic. Or a breather. Or a break. He just kept working. We nicknamed him The Cowboy."

And LaBeouf admits starring alongside the veteran actor was a dream come true - although he would never admit that to Ford's face.

He adds, "Working with Harrison was really special to me. I didn't tell him that, of course. He's not the type of guy you go up to and say, 'You're special to me.' He's the kind of guy you give a handshake to and stay quiet. A man's man. And not bulls**t machismo, either. He's honest butch."

Hayden Panettiere - Panettiere Blames Paparazzi For Spears Downfall

HEROES actress HAYDEN PANETTIERE has urged the media to allow troubled BRITNEY SPEARS the space she needs "to heal".

The star has accused the hordes of snappers who constantly pursue Spears of ruining the pop star's life - likening their behaviour to that of an obsessed "stalker".

And the actress believes the photographers' behaviour is dangerous - insisting Spears' recent string of car collisions is down to them taking high risks to ensure they get lucrative snaps of the star.

She says, "I love acting more than anything else in the world, so I can't see myself stopping. But I think this situation is becoming so dangerous - it causes car accidents.

"There's no differences between what they do and stalking somebody. Look at somebody like Britney Spears - who deals with 50 cars following her all the time - nobody gives her room to heal."

And Panettiere is devastated the Toxic singer has fallen out of favour with music fans - because she was her idol growing up.

She adds, "To me growing up, she was everything, and we built her up and ripped her down."

Amy Winehouse 'Cheated On Blake Twice'

After a video emerged of Amy Winehouse singing a ‘racist’ song’, the troubled singer’s day of woe has been compounded by allegations that she has cheated on her husband Black Fielder-Civil twice.

Her mother-in-law Georgette confirmed to the News of the World that she Winehouse into Pentonville Prison to confess to Blake about the infidelities.

She has allegedly slept with Towers of London bassist Kristian Marr as well as her manager’s assistant 22-year-old Alex Haines.

Speaking to the Sunday newspaper, Georgette said: “Amy was so riddled with shame she visited Blake in Pentonville and confessed all. Blake sounded terrible when he told me. I find her timing incredibly cruel.

“He was focused on his trial and fighting for his freedom. Now he’s a broken man, knowing his wife has cheated on him twice. He feels humiliated. Amy’s infidelity is inexcusable.”

Georgette continued: “Blake says she’s filled with self-disgust and now feels worthless. She knows she has let him down and blamed the drugs and the booze. She said she hates everything about herself.”

The Southern hip-hop duet called Rehab were literally a intersection of their namesake. Original members Danny Boone and Brooks Buford, both convalescent alcoholics and dose addicts, met at a local rehab facility and connected over their love of music. Mashing rap with rock, the duo released their debut album, Southern Discomfort, in 2000 on the Sony pronounce. Cee-Lo, Goodie Mob, and Cody ChesnuTT were some of the guests on the album, which would breed the Top 15 modern rock strike "It Don't Matter." Two years were washed-out on the route encouraging the album, including a stint on the Vans Warped Tour, and and then the duet splintered. Boone maintained the mention and recruited 4 veteran musicians for a new Rehab. Now a quintette with Boone as the solitary singer/rapper -- and too victimization his birthname, Danny Alexander -- Rehab signed with Arshid Entertainment and released the ambitious Graffito the World in 2005.

John Mayer - Mayer Pays Tribute To Talented Wentz

Singer JOHN MAYER has written a gushing tribute to FALL OUT BOY star PETE WENTZ - insisting he "thinks the world" of the "talented" bassist.

In a post on his website Mayer congratulated the 28-year-old on his recent marriage to pop star Ashlee Simpson and praised his creativity, talent and humble attitude.

The pair became pals when they recently hooked up to record a cover of Michael Jackson's Beat It together - and have been firm friends ever since.

And Mayer was determined to let the world know how much he values Wentz.

He writes, "You're one of the best eggs in the music industry, hands down. With as much talent as you have, I'd expect you'd have some eccentric ego, but from what I can tell you seem to have none. (That actually makes you more talented.) I'll throw a guitar in the car and be there anytime you need me.

"I think the world of you. And wish you all the happiness your artsy head will accept. Fame is just one big lesson in being a man, and you're doing a bang up job? Best to you and your lovely wife? JM"
